Agartala May 04: A violent clash unfolded during the Baisakhi Mela at Rahimpur Bazar, situated under the Bokshanagar block.
The altercation centered around the distribution of stalls, resulting in serious injuries to Khorshed Alam, a well-known social worker in the area.
The annual Baisakhi Mela commenced as usual on Saturday at Rahimpur Bazar, drawing small business owners from various parts of Tripura to set up their shops.
A fair committee oversees the management of the event. In a contentious decision, the committee allocated a stall to an outsider directly in front of a tea shop owned by Rahimpur’s Shahjahan Mia (known locally as Dhona).
When the outsider attempted to set up shop at the designated spot, Shahjahan Mia intervened, leading to a verbal confrontation.
Khorshed Alam, the fair committee’s editor and a prominent figure in the community, stepped in to mediate.
However, tensions escalated rapidly. Shahjahan, fueled by anger, emerged from his shop brandishing a knife and stabbed Khorshed in the chest.
The injured Khorshed collapsed, blood staining the ground.
News of the incident spread swiftly, prompting Khorshed’s brother, Sohel, to confront Shahjahan and strike him on the hand with a stick.
Meanwhile, other fair committee members and local residents rushed to the scene. Shahjahan managed to flee, but the Kalachara police swiftly arrived, launching an investigation. They apprehended Shahjahan and transported him to the local police station.
Khorshed Alam received initial treatment at the Bokshanagar Social Health Center before being referred to the Agartala ILS Hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
The tense situation in Rahimpur underscores the need for peaceful resolution and community cooperation during festive events.
